Women in South Africa are suffering under the siege of gender-based violence and femicide.

#GiveHerACrown, South Africa’s groundbreaking female empowerment platform – proudly empowered by Jaguar South Africa – exists to change the narrative for women in South Africa through the power of storytelling and the arts.
#GiveHerACrown has partnered with prominent curators Teresa Lizamore and Phumzile Nombuso Twala, along with 16 notable South African artists who have each created and donated a bespoke crown of art.

Teresa Lizamore and Phumzile Nombuso Twala.

These 16 crowns will be exhibited and sold during 16 Days of Activism in aid of the fight against gender-based violence.

Teresa Lizamore, co-curator of the campaign stated: “Gender-based violence is close to my heart because as a woman, a mother and a businesswoman I believe that there should be equality amongst all genders and of course mutual respect. If we all stand together, we could, and we should see results. That’s why each woman deserves a crown signifying the strength, power and regality of that woman.”
Her co-curator, Phumzile Nombuso Twala, shared her outlook on the success of the campaign: “During a time when this country is grappling with the scourge of violence inflicted upon women and children, I find it inspiring that these 16 artists have dedicated their time and energy towards raising more awareness about this cause. These artworks will go a long way in driving the message home.”

The 16 artists who have dedicated their passion and skill towards change are: Simphiwe Buthelezi, James Delaney, Carlo Gibson and Dominique Le Grange, Gordon Froud, Lebogang Mabusela, Collen Maswanganyi, Cow Mash, Lebohang Motaung, Lerato Motaung, Haidee Nel, Dean Pozniak (Simon and Mary), Nkhensani Rihlampfu, Jo Roets, Usha Seejarim, Olwethu de Vos and Angela Yeung.

Each crown of art is inspired by a South African woman and activist who has used their work, voice and influence towards the empowerment of women.
