KFC South Africa’s Viral Marketing Masterclass

As football fans obsessed over the viral Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal photo, KFC South Africa spotted an opportunity, and turned one of the internet's biggest conversations into one of the country's funniest brand moments.

When a decades-old photograph of Lionel Messi bathing a baby Lamine Yamal resurfaced online, football fans did what the internet does best: they started connecting the dots.

Messi wore the number 19 when the photo was taken. Nineteen years later, Yamal wears the number 19. The pair were set to face each other on one of football’s biggest stages, prompting countless theories, jokes and viral posts across social media.

While fans debated fate, coincidence and football folklore, one South African brand saw something else: an opportunity.

KFC joins the conversation

Instead of simply reposting the viral image, KFC South Africa recreated the concept with its own unmistakable twist.

One image featured Colonel Sanders bathing a baby clown, a playful jab at McDonald’s iconic mascot. The second showed him bathing a lion cub, an obvious nod to Hungry Lion.

The caption?

“Y’all my sons fr.”

Simple. Timely. Instantly understood.

Within hours, the post had generated tens of thousands of likes, thousands of comments and thousands of shares as South Africans praised the brand’s sense of humour.

Why the campaign worked

The success of the post isn’t just because it is funny. And believe me, it’s hilarious. But the post succeeded because it tapped into a conversation people were already having instead of trying to create a new one.

Reactive marketing works best when brands understand internet culture well enough to contribute something original before the moment passes. Timing is often just as important as the creative idea itself.

KFC South Africa has become known for exactly this approach, consistently finding ways to insert itself into trending conversations without feeling forced or overly promotional.

More than a meme

What makes campaigns like this memorable is their simplicity.

There was no elaborate production, no lengthy explanation and no expensive campaign rollout. If you had seen the original Messi and Yamal image, you understood the joke immediately. If you hadn’t, curiosity did the rest.

The result was a post that entertained audiences while reinforcing KFC South Africa’s reputation as one of the country’s sharpest social media brands.

In a digital landscape where trends disappear almost as quickly as they emerge, the biggest wins often belong to the brands that know when to speak, what to say and, just as importantly, how little needs to be said.
