A few days since the announcement, Lindokuhle Sobekwa’s win of the 2025 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize continues to resonate as a moment of profound artistic achievement and cultural significance.
The honour further marked a significant milestone not only in Mr. Sobekwa’s career but also in the wider landscape of contemporary photography as he received the Prize for his photobook “I Carry Her Photo with Me”, a deeply personal work that reflects on the memory of his sister, whose disappearance remains a painful mystery for the artist and his family.
Crafted in a scrapbook style, the book blends photographs, handwritten reflections, and family images into a poignant exploration of grief, memory, and the weight of historical trauma.
Though grounded in intensely personal experience, the book reaches beyond the individual to engage with wider issues in South African society…
Congratulations to Lindokuhle Sobekwa, whose work continues to affirm his place as a leading voice in a new generation of artists—one who powerfully illustrates how photography can serve as a medium for remembrance, healing, and truth-telling.
