Brenda Mtambo’s New single Khululeka that accompanies her upcoming album SANE
Friday is the day of the week we live in constant anticipation for. We always TGIF because Monday to Thursday offer us hardly any rest. Who would sit still knowing that me time and rest awaits them from Friday? And we cannot wait to see the sun rise this Friday, the 23rd of April 2021 because we are receiving a musical gift from Brenda Mtambo’s upcoming album.
TG we have only have to wait for a few more sleeps.
ukukhululeka
The name bestowed up on Mtambo’s single means be at rest in isiZulu (and other Nguni languages and dialects). Knowing that the subject of what has been written in song is something that we all need to make time for in our daily lives (and not just on Fridays), has led us down lanes in our minds. In other words, we cannot help but think that Mtambo chose Friday as her release day for a reason. Do Fridays offer her a state of being at rest too? In addition, it makes us question why Khululeka is the first musical narrative she wishes to share? What is the message about rest and being at peace she wishes to share with us? Therefore, we cannot wait to receive this gift and understand ukukhululeka from the perspective of both Mtambo’s vocals and what is the result of Mduduzi Madela’s lyrics. Since David Mutunda produced and recorded Khululeka, what comes from this is part of the perspective.
Khululeka, in Mtambo’s words
It seems there is already an answer to the question that seeks to help us understand the meaning of the title. Mtambo expresses that the title of the song stems from her lived experience with chronic anxiety, a diagnosis that led to her self-introspection and finding the words to express herself.
‘Khululeka is me pouring my heart out and hoping it brings healing to those struggling with mental issues.’
Therefore, the new song places our hands in its palms and walks us into spaces with spots of liberty, sanity as well as hope. Her vocals soothe our souls and remind us that there is sunshine after the rain. It a soulful progression of her sound and we cannot wait to be soothed.
Khululeka is available for purchase on iTunes. In addition to this, we are all welcome to stream it on all digital platforms.
The album SANE will be released in August 2021.
