Ending the silence, doing something
Lindsey Eryn always shares important messages and affirmations. There is one that applies to our current climate in our society. It reads:
‘When you see broken pieces of humanity, broken systems, broken ways of doing things- do not look away.
Do not sit out-
saying there is nothing I can do.
Like anything, change happens when we decide to show up and say something’
Our society has many broken pieces of humanity. The brokenness is reflected in gender based violence. How do we repair this so the piece can fit back? We cannot look away as Eryn says, change happens when we say something, do something, be someone for someone affected by the brokenness.
Writer & Director Nthabiseng Mosieane is showing up and saying something about gender based violence in her debut film Overcome Beloved. The film is her vehicle for change as it magnifies the effects of gender-based violence. It will premier on SABC 1 as part of The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). The work she is doing through film is important for our society to understand fully the consequences of gender based violence. It is breaking the silence and forcing us to come together to help solve the problem and strike a conversation that will open many minds and in doing so, educate people in our society. The discussions around gender based violence should not be carried by victims and victims only. This is our society and we all have the responsibility to care for each other, without fail, every single time. Do not look away. NFVF AND SABC EMPOWERS EMERGING FEMALE FILMMAKER’S SHORT FILM ON GENDER BASED VIOLENCE
The National Film and Video Foundation, along with the SABC and Zinc Pictures gives voice to emerging female filmmakers and one such female is Nthabiseng Mosieane whose debut short film centres around the topic that plagues South Africa, Gender-Based Violence. Overcome Beloved which premiered on SABC1 last night is about a young wife and mother Nomhle Nkosana who is wrestling with her new reality, as she finds herself stuck in a safehouse with her daughter. When her husband finds them, she finally sees him for the monster he has always been and fighting for her life becomes her only option.
Reflecting on the short film director Nthabiseng Mosieane states, ‘this movie comes from a place of deep hurt and compassion, as a woman living in South Africa it pains me seeing headlines of violence perpetrated against women and children. So as a creative I asked myself, ‘what can I do?’. I wrote a short story that mirrors our society but with a hope that change is coming’. The director’s hope through the film is to send a message of empowerment to all who are in domestic cases, that one can overcome, there is always a new day.
The yearlong writing process prepped the director to shoot on an intimate set February that allowed her to focus all her energy to the cast. The film stars lead actress Noxolo Dlamini alongside film and TV legend, Bongile Mantsai. Mbali Ntombela, Themba Mkhoma and Asanda Mvusi have added to this quality array of talent.
The short film has just received a nomination for Best Short Script by the Writer’s Guild Of South Africa, Nthabiseng Mosieane is a name worth noting. The film will also be sent to various film festivals.
