From Self Taught Artist To Scholar: Rick Baloyi’s Creative Adventure

Rick Baloyi, a visual artist from Tshivhuyuni village near Elim, is making waves in the art world with his unique and personal creations. Despite growing up in an area with limited opportunities for growth, Baloyi’s passion for art has always burned bright.

Baloyi, a self-taught artist, is skilled in painting, sculpting and screen printing. His work recently caught the attention of art enthusiasts when it was exhibited at the prestigious Nedbank International Polo event held at the Inanda Club in Sandton, Johannesburg. This recognition was a testament to his talent and dedication.

In 2019, Baloyi was awarded a scholarship by the Arts & Culture Trust (ACT), the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO), and Nedbank to pursue his visual arts studies at a tertiary institution. This opportunity provided him with the necessary support to further develop his artistic skills and style.

Inspired by his mother and aunts, who showed support for him and his cousins, Baloyi found the motivation to pursue his dreams. Despite the challenges he faced growing up, he never lost hope and used art as an outlet for self-expression.

Baloyi explains that his art is a reflection of his life experiences and the people who have influenced him. He draws inspiration from his family, particularly the strong women who raised him in the absence of a father figure. Their hard work and love serve as a constant source of inspiration for his artistic creations.
