As we approach the end of 2023 and eagerly anticipate the festive season, an exciting group exhibition titled “Krismis” is making its way to art enthusiasts. This exhibition showcases a collection of artworks inspired by the colloquial Afrikaans slang for Christmas, walking  into the delicate interplay between consumerism, faith, and the societal pressures of celebrating accomplishments while hinting at a sense of absence or something amiss.

Featuring the works of three talented artists, Bernard Brand, Octavia Roodt, and Neo Theku, the Krismis exhibition offers a unique perspective on the challenges that affect young adults’ mental health and invites viewers to reflect on the true essence of the festive season.

Neo Theku

Bernard Brand, a portrait and commercial photographer, brings his expertise in bold dramatic lighting and conceptual and experimental photography techniques to the exhibition. His captivating images provoke thought and introspection, shedding light on the impact of consumerism and the pursuit of material possessions on our lives.

Octavia Roodt, an illustrator with a passion for storytelling, draws inspiration from her design training and the narrative quality of Franco-Belgian comics. Her illustrative style beautifully weaves personal and local symbology, creating spaces and stories that invite viewers to explore their own experiences and emotions.

Octavia Roodt

Neo Theku, a self-taught visual artist, utilizes photography as a medium to shed light on the challenges faced by young adults’ mental health. Through his thought-provoking works, he encourages viewers to consider the societal pressures and expectations that often overshadow the joyous spirit of the festive season.

The Krismis exhibition serves as a reminder to all of us that amidst the exchange of gifts and the allure of social media boasting, it is crucial to remember those who may be susceptible to loneliness, melancholy, depression, and despair during this time.

As we manifest new goals for the forthcoming year and celebrate our past successes, the Krismis exhibition encourages us to prioritize self-care and rest while staying true to the spirit of the festive season.
