As we step into the year 2024, we are thrilled to present Artvillain as our first cover artist. Artvillain, a photographer and film director, who has made a name for himself by capturing the essence of his subjects with well thought detailing.

With an impressive portfolio that includes collaborations with  artists and influencers, Artvillian’s passion for photography started during his early teens and has since flourished into a career.

On the day of our shoot, Artvillain invited us into his childhood home. The homely atmosphere was evident as we were greeted by photo frames of cherished memories of family and friends.  It was clear that Art Villain’s upbringing played a role on his perspective about life and art.

As we began prepping for the interview, Artvillain’s welcoming spirit sparked a conversation about the evolution of photography and the rapid growth of creatives in South Africa. His enthusiasm for his craft was infectious, and the room filled with positive energy. We touched on the art of finessing film photography, and the exchange of ideas flowed effortlessly, punctuated by moments of laughter and shared knowledge.

Moving from one location to another, we couldn’t help but notice the undeniable presence Artvillain held within the streets of Alex. As a native of the township, he knew every corner. The locals recognized him,  calling him by his real name, “Khaba.”

During our conversations, Artvillain shared insights into some of his notable projects, including a shoot with Riky Rick,  who is one of the people that uplifted him early in his career. Since that encounter, Artvillian’s career  has been nothing short of amazing to say the least. With his work becoming a part of cultural iconography.

He has embraced the grittiness of Gomora, his kasi, and used it as a backdrop to accentuate the concealed beauty within, creating visual narratives. In his “township shoots” and projects we’ve notice that he does not shy away from the challenges and complexities of Alex.

Throughout our conversations with Artvillain, his passion and poise were palpable. His dedication to his craft was evident in every project he discussed. His love for photography and filmmaking shone through every word, leaving no doubt about his dedication.

As the new year unfolds, Artvillain has ambitious plans to push the boundaries of his work even further. We eagerly await the visual stories that ArtVillian will be releasing  in the coming months.
