The BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA pays homage to Mahlangu’s history with the BMW brand, as she previously designed the 12th BMW Art Car in 1991. This time, Esther had the opportunity to incorporate cutting edge colour-change technology developed by E Ink into the design of the fully-electric sedan.

The result is a dynamic work of art that combines art and design through progressive technology, where the cars surface can be electronically animated to display Mahlangu’s art in constantly changing compositions.
Named after Mahlangu’s first son, the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA features sections of film that can be electronically animated. The car particles in the E ink film can be changed by applying an electric voltage, allowing Esther Mahlangu’s patterns to come to life.

To complement the visual experience, the i5 NOSTOKANA is accompanied by a specially composed sound by Renzo Vitale, The BMW Group’s Creative Director, Sound. The sound mix combines Mahlangu’s voice, the sound of the feather brushes she used for painting, and other elements to create a unique auditory experience.
