Goodman Gallery in New York hosted the exhibition ‘Landing (again).’ The exhibition concluded of eight artists from Africa and its diaspora who have had an influence in art history. This is a continuation of the earlier exhibition called ‘Landing’, which took place from November 2023 to January 2024. The gallery would like to keep the conversation going about these artists and their impact in the world of art.

The artists featured in this series include El Anatsui, William Kentridge, David Koloane, Atta Kwami, Sam Nhlengethwa, George Pemba, Gerard Sekoto, Carrie Mae Weems, and Sue Williamson. Each of these artists has a story and style that contributes to the global art.

William Kentridge will present his latest work, ‘The Great Yes, The Great No’. This piece premiered at LUMA Arles last year and is now touring the United States. Kentridge’s work focuses on the experience of being part of a crowd, showing how we can feel connected yet separated at the same time.

Gerard Sekoto, a renowned painter, is another key figure in this exhibition. His painting ‘Le Café Parisien’, created in 1959, displays the atmosphere of Parisian café life. Sekoto’s work looks into his experiences and the community around him, making his art relatable to many.

George Pemba is known for his paintings of everyday life in Mzansi. His 1947 piece, ‘Portrait of a Pensive Boy’, shows a young boy lost in thought. The boy’s expression and posture tell a story of longing and maturity.

Sue Williamson is a contemporary artist known for her work on social change. In the late 1980s, she created a series of portraits titled ‘A Few South Africans’, which focused on women who played roles in the struggle against apartheid.

The ‘Landing (again)’ exhibition is timely, with recognition of these artists in todays art world. Their works are now part of big collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in London. The Goodman Gallery is also hosting a viewing room in London, with the idea of creating a connection between the two cities.

This exhibition will run until February 28, 2025,
