Maxhosa Africa made a big splash at Paris Fashion Week 2025 with its new collection called “Lo Ngu-Mbulelo.” This was an exciting moment for the brand, as it is the only African label on the official schedule for the second time in a row.

The name “Lo Ngu-Mbulelo” comes from the Xhosa word “Umbulelo,” which means “thanksgiving.” This collection is all about honouring our roots and showing gratitude for the blessings we have received. It connects with ancient African traditions, where giving thanks was an important part of life. In the past, these expressions of gratitude often took place through ceremonies that were believed to bring prosperity.

Laduma Ngxokolo, the Chief Creative Director of Maxhosa Africa, explains, “This collection is about honouring the practice of expressing gratitude for the blessings we have received and for the many cultures and communities that have embraced and shaped us.” This shows that fashion is not just about looking good; it is also a way to appreciate the creativity and wisdom passed down from our ancestors.

The concept of Umbulelo is a reminder of the importance of giving thanks. Traditionally, this practice involved sacrifices, prayers, and blessings at a sacred shrine. The phrase “Kube Chosi,” which means “Let everything spoken at the shrine manifest,” captures the spirit of this collection perfectly.
