Changing the face of Africa’s Advertising

For many years Africa has been perceived as a dark continent with a vast amount of socio-economic problems. What ismore, the visual elements of an Africa with lions roaming the streets and the stereotypical images of poverty. Photography has been the powerful engine to these false stereotypical views circulating the world as African images have been represented negatively in media and advertising. But photography marketplace and stock footage platform Afristock, alongside Afrikaren Media, are putting a stop to that.

Afristock aims to bring Africa back into the light by displaying authentic African visual stories that not only showcase the diversity and progressiveness of the beautiful African nation but also display African stories through a photography perspective. In achieving this, Afristock and Afrikaren Media have agreed to collaborate and host a virtual event that seeks to highlight the importance of promoting and celebrating African creatives and storytelling.

This Free event will cover a wide variety of issues regarding the accessibility to African stock footage and the lack of positive representation of African photographs in advertising. Discussions regarding how we can promote platforms for African creatives and showcase positive images which could greatly contribute to the growth of the African continent will be raised and discussed. These key issues will not only be hosted on Hopin platform Moderated by Karen Mwendera, an award-winning journalist and founder of Afrikaren Media, but key African speakers will too be present to help answer and provide insight on the broad landscape of photography in Africa.

These key speakers include:

Forbes Africa art director and layout artist, Lucy Nkosi, who has sourced impressive images for various magazine publications and has worked with various African celebrities including Castor Semenya and Connie Ferguson. She has become a key player in the industry using her expertise to enlighten and reshape the publishing world.

Senior Lead Strategist at Publics Groupe Africa, “Mashokane “Mash Ramu” Ramusetheli is a value creator and storyteller.  she is the Managing Director of her own Advertising and Marketing Technology company called Maverick Maven Muse, where she brings her creative and strategic prowess to help medium-to-large businesses grow their brands and customer base online and offline in Africa. 

Creative director and photographer, DANNY WONDERS, from Ghana, is a visual storyteller who brings the gold out of his audience through capturing the true essence of those behind his lens. In the entertainment industry, he has worked with the likes of Burna Boy, Madonna, Chris brown, The Migos, French Montana and more. He launched his own production company called Wondervision Films.

Zimbabwe/Canadian based Brian Dodo, founder of BmDodo Strategic Design and Mapp Africa.

From Nigeria, multi-award-winning visual storyteller, and communications expert Nigeria, Eti-Inyene Godwin Akpan, also Founder and executive director of the Guinness World Record Africa’s largest photo community (PhotoWaka Africa).

Lastly, From Botswana, ?Founder & Managing Director of both Social Light and Afristock, Tony Mautsu, is a young 28-year-old Entrepreneur and Digital Solutions Expert.

This Africa Day- 25 May 2021, marks the rise of a new era in African photography as the African nation, media and advertising houses, business, and stakeholders in need of authentic African stock footage as well as creatives from all parts of the world are called to join a World-changing event, that will not be empowering and showcase the authenticity of African visual storytelling but also save the photography perspective in Africa.
