Like the crown that it is, Lebohang Motaung has always treated the hair she’s ever worked on like gems.
With a hair styling background, Motaung has managed to turn her love for hair into a creative and intriguing art form.
For Lebohang, hair is one of the most versatile parts of the body as it allows people with the freedom to showcase their personalities through changing and styling it.
After one of her hair art pieces went viral on social media, the artist was quickly thrusted into the spotlight. In making her art piece, the young creative made use of, of course hair, to which she laid across three canvases joined by braids.
Motaung’s work, which she titled Formation, is a demonstration of the relationship between the hairstylist and client, specifically between women through sisterhood.
According to Lebohang, salons are safe spaces for women where they can be found laughing and forming bonds with others that later turn into lifelong friendships.
“Women are most comfortable while having their hair done – you can tell by the gossip and the confessions that flow during the process. I wanted to communicate that message because when you see women at a salon they are always talking and connecting. So, to best show that I decided to use three canvases,” she said.
In this specific art piece, Lebohang highlights the importance of communication and the flow of ideas and thoughts.
“They all had to connect to each other and when you think about it the connection is done from one head to the other. It symbolizes the connection of thoughts and shared conversations and the hair is what links everything together. Because at the end of the day they came to do their hair,” she said.
