Head of Wild Bean South Africa, Danielle Croza took a moment to discuss the recent Wild Bean Design-A- Cup competition that saw over 300 young South African’s from across the country showcasing their most unique artistic interpretations. This year’s theme, My Cup, My Expression was as poetic and reflective of the yearning spirit of most creatives during this time. The theme was a dovetail from the 20-year anniversary celebrations and therefore centred around what celebration means to you and how you would translate that celebration in a cup.
Danielle Croza expressed her appreciation for the group of finalists that were selected, “We’ve got a very diverse group of people who are all female which is fantatsic” states Croza. ” This group is very diverse representing South African in a unique and meaningful way’. This year’s competition sees the first all-female top 3 finalists with all three ladies representing three cities. We are very excited to have helped unleash girl power and passion celebrating women in design by giving them the platform to really express their unique creative flair.
The inspirations behind the finalists designs were vast and rich in cultural references, with second runner up Latisha Ramsamy drawing inspiration for her design from Diwala — a festival celebrated in the Indian culture. First runner up Kelly Ntsedu says that she drew inspiration from something she really loved, music. “The minute I heard the word celebration I thought of what celebration meant to me and I thought of music.” says Ntsedu, “I’ve always loved the history of music so I really wanted to integrated instruments of African origin and just create this celebration on the cup with confetti, the instruments playing and the dancing beans”.
Design- A – Cup competition winner Mika De Villers shares how she drew inspiration for her design from the beauty of the African sun and the country’s diversity. “I looked to the colour palette that they gave us and it had this warm coffee feeling to it, that made me think to the coffee beans to recreate the BP logo. ” says De Villers. Mika, who walked away with a cool hundred thousand rands, shared her plans for the cash prize which she will be using to further her studies.
