The exhibition showcases the artwork of artists like Dimakatso Mathopa, Emma Coppola, Keabetswe Seema, Lerato Lodi, and many more. Through their art, these women share their stories and perspectives on womanhood, inviting viewers to engage in meaningful conversations about femininity in South Africa and beyond.
“Steelwool and Other Paradoxes” walks into the tapestry of women’s lives, looking at themes of strength and vulnerability, tradition and innovation, and different forms of care. The exhibition uses materiality as a starting point to reflect on gender dynamics and the resilience of women as they navigate their cultural heritage and personal journeys.
One of the striking artworks featured in the exhibition is by artist Mary Sibande, where her alter-ego, Sophie, encounters her twin in a visual narrative. This piece, titled “The Purple Shall Govern,” challenges historical narratives and colonial depictions of South African women, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the past and the present.
