The Field Museum in Chicago is hosting a new fashion exhibition called “Africa Fashion,” showcasing the creativity of African designers. This exhibition opens on Friday and will run until June 29. It features over 180 pieces from artists across more than 20 African countries.

Visitors will find a stunning array of fashion, including a beautiful evening gown once worn by former first lady Michelle Obama, a contemporary piece made from cowrie shells, and a colourful robe crafted from hand-woven Nigerian cloth.

Angelica London, the museum’s project manager, explained that many people wonder why a museum known for dinosaurs would host a fashion exhibition. However, “Africa Fashion” fits perfectly with the museum’s mission to celebrate diverse cultures and histories. The exhibition was organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and aims to showcase the innovation and global impact of African fashion.

Lead curator Christine Checinska emphasized that the exhibition is about “agency” and “abundance.” She wants visitors to experience the magnificence of African creativity. Alongside the stunning garments, guests can also explore textiles, accessories, photographs, and videos. The exhibition consists of  mannequins with various skin tones and hairstyles, music from African artists, and touchable items for those with visual impairments.

The first section of the exhibition focuses on the mid-20th century, a time when many African countries were gaining independence. This era sparked a cultural renaissance reflected in clothing, music, and art. Attendees will learn about influential designers like Shade Thomas-Fahm from Nigeria and Kofi Ansah from Ghana, who found success in Europe but returned home to contribute to their communities.

Contemporary pieces from designers like Thebe Magugu from South Africa and Artsi Ifrach from Marrakesh are also on display. For example, Ifrach created a transparent burka and mask embroidered with the Hamsa symbol, representing protection and good fortune. These modern works encourage conversations about culture and gender expression, such as Neo Serati Mofammere’s eye-catching metallic suit celebrating gender fluidity.

The exhibition also includes a complementary show called “Connecting Threads,” featuring local Chicago designers. This part of the exhibition includes impressive ensembles, jewellery, and textiles created by artists from the community, further enriching the experience.

Angelica London hopes that “Africa Fashion” will attract diverse audiences and help them see themselves represented in the museum. She wants visitors to leave feeling inspired and connected to the vibrant culture of Africa.
