Kwanda Xaba, a talented illustrator, has recently taken our editorial team by storm with his innovative approach to visual storytelling. His latest project is an animation of our cover of Samurai Farai, a popular South African visual artist and mental health activist.
The Samurai Farai cover depicts a modern-day samurai, a Yasuke to be precise, wielding his grillz in a dramatic pose. The cover is striking and powerful, but Xaba saw an opportunity to take it to the next level by bringing it to life through animation.
Xaba’s animation of the cover is a masterclass in visual storytelling. The animation begins with the samurai warrior standing stoically on a full-moon night, with two swords added on the cover.
The animation then cuts to a shadow figure of Samurai Farai. The added feathered throw on his shoulders appears through the shadows, giving it that extra story-telling feel.. something that should definitely live on TV.
Xaba’s animation is a stunning example of how a cover can be transformed into a powerful piece of visual storytelling. By bringing the Samurai Farai cover to life, Xaba has created a dynamic and exciting animation that captures the essence of true SA creativity.
