When you think of the most timeless, reliable and durable pair of denim apparel the first name just pops into mind is Levi’s. The veteran brand which has the largest market share in denim merchandise — in history might I add, has not only proven to be the leaders in apparel they have also spread their superlative operation style throughout a myriad of business ventures. Be it diffusion lines as Dockers, creative collaborations with tastemakers within pop culture, Levi’s perpetually demonstrate their extensive range.
In October 2019, the brand introduced a residency for creative expression within Africa in the form of Haus of Strauss Africa. The initiative is penned as a, “physical embodiment of the Levi’s® brand on the continent, a place to build community engagement and nurture and celebrate African creativity.” Lead by a trio of creative professionals: master tailor William Phala, style curator Amy Zama and arts and culture all rounder Angela Weickl — the brand achieved their mission of documenting African creativity by inviting creators and innovators into their space to customize garments and discuss their respective trades.
Many local artists spanning across scores of creative industries have visited the Haus of Strauss Africa space showing their individual stylistic flare in the customised garments they create in collaboration with the team. From bleach stained blue jeans to laser printed graphic jackets, the range of unique pieces are vast. Enthralled by the talent of the many artists that have walked through the Haus of Strauss Africa doors, we have decided to document a couple of our favourite customised pieces from this year.
