Lindokuhle Sobekwa’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery is an exploration of his personal history through photography. The exhibition, titled Umkhondo: Going Deeper, brings together two sets of his work for the first time, offering a glimpse into his journey and experiences.

Born in 1995 in Katlehong, Sobekwa is a young South African photographer who captures the essence of his roots and family history. In one part of the exhibition, titled Ezilalini (The Country), Sobekwa explores the landscapes of his ancestral home in Tsomo, Eastern Cape.

At the heart of the exhibition is Sobekwa’s ongoing project, I Carry Her Photo With Me, which began as a way to cope with the loss of his sister, Ziyanda. This deeply personal project has evolved over the years, culminating in a handmade photobook and a touching seven-minute film that will be shown for the first time in Johannesburg. The film weaves together images, texts, and sounds, creating an intimate portrait of memories and emotions.
