Life follows a rhythm and Masana Khoza originating from Centurion holds the drum… and he only got better by playing.
Khoza’s pursuit for music is fuelled by one of his biggest inspirations, JayMusic Sarela, a young man from Shoshanguve who has performed alongside Tshwane Gospel Choir. Khoza’s regular visits to the church also sparked his interest in music and his goal of being diverse in the music industry allows him to explore different genres such as amapiano, gospel and even mbaqanga.
His job as a drummer is to ensure that the drum sounds and pattern fit the song well. He says that his creative process starts with him thinking of a beat, then the sounds of the drums, then the bassline follows and the keys shortly after, and once that is sorted out the extra sound effects, mixing and mastering come at the end.
Khoza says that he would love to collaborate with the likes of DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small, Oscar Mbo, Mas Musiq, and Clxrity, just to name a few. And if he were ever presented with the opportunity to open a show for any artist it would be Nàtive Deep. Hinting at being a man of many talents, Khoza says that if it wasn’t for career as a musician, he would be an accountant or a soccer player.
Khoza, however, believes he is in the correct profession and he finds great joy in his work. He has performed at various places locally such as JoJo’s, Junk Park and News Café.
“Always keep praying and never give up” is advice that Khoza lives by and uses as encouragement to achieve his goals as he is working to grow, have sponsors and a few international features in the future.
