Sikelela Damane received a BA in Fine Art from the University of Fort Hare and currently lives and works in Cape Town.
Damane works predominantly in the medium of painting, using materials such as acrylic paint, oil paint, aerosol, paper, marks, earth, and photography, but has also expanded his art practice into new media, such as video art/performances.
His work generally provokes political arrogance and engages with contemporary socio-political and cultural narratives.
Borrowing from both historical and present images to communicate certain ideas, the artist draws attention to popular culture while simultaneously confronting conversations, controversies and events that have an impact on our global village, with emphasis towards Africa and the South.
Damane is deeply inspired by what is happening around him and the current information that we receive and engage with via our media-based platforms, be it the Internet, news or oral dialogues.
