Graphic designer, Nceba Bhengu’s latest project is the perfect renascence of traditions in a contemporary society. The digital artwork has been making the rounds on social media and the work truly speaks volumes on how tradition, as a living force, has shaped the ongoing human creativity and adapted itself to the modern world.

Nceba reimagines the mbadada sandals with his own rendition of the traditionally handmade shoes indigenously worn by the Zulu tribe. Mbadada sandals are originally made from old truck tires, displaying intricate geometric designs. Nceba redesigns the shoe using chunky platforms from what would be a designer sneaker creating a modern and contemporary hybrid between traditional fashion and streetwear.

Words from the artist himself.
Where do you find most of your inspiration for art making?
As a kid born in KwaSayimani, a rural residential area in Umzimkulu KZN, my inspiration stems from my surrounding. At a tender age I relocated to Soweto in Johannesburg where my inspiration was nurtured in different institutions such as, Funda Community College, Jabulani Technical High School and N.E.M.I.S.A. Rural and urban integration shaped my artistic expression.
How did digital art and designing find its way to you?
Moving into the urban area allowed me to encounter different forms of technology. I embarked on a fine arts journey which led me to explore digital art, more specifically animation and design.
What was the first thing that came to mind when you started this project?
To redesign Imbadada into a shoe to be worn daily, with utmost comfortability and versatility.
How would you describe your creative process in redesigning the ZULU Mbadada sandals?
The aim was to preserve African culture so that the next generation can pick up the baton and run the race.
Do you have any up and coming projects that we should look out for in the near future?
Absolutely. The sky is the limit!
