Patrick Seruwu, a self-taught artist based in Joburg , is gaining recognition for his expressive artwork. Serum’s journey has been shaped by the impactful women in his life, from his single mother to the nurturing presence of adopted mothers, sisters and aunts. Inspired by the strength and struggles of these women, Seruwu channels their narratives into his gestural canvas paintings, creating a visual representation of the multifaceted Afro-urban female experience.

Seruwu’s paintings do not conform to traditional portraiture. Instead, he presents an amalgamation of stories and experiences, depicted in human form with a highly expressive style. Through his interactions with women in Johannesburg, Seruwu collects a multitude of narratives that inform the direction of his artwork. His gestural brushstrokes, including driving paint and splatter, convey a range of emotions and experiences.

The dripping application of paint symbolizes the weight thrust upon women, representing the challenges and hardships faced by modern-day women in African urban environments. In contrast, areas of levity indicated by paint splatter bring lightness to the sections where they appear. Through these various painting techniques, Seruwu visually articulates the complexities of the female experience.

Despite his relatively short time in the South African art scene, Seruwu has achieved remarkable success. His exhibitions consistently sell out, and he has received commissions from influential individuals and institutions in South Africa. This rapid rise in popularity has made him one of the most sought-after contemporary artists of his generation. Seruwu’s talent has also earned his residencies around the world, as the art community and collectors have embraced his unique artistic style.

While many people may not be aware, Seruwu’s artistic journey was greatly influenced by his close relationship with fellow artist Benon Lutaaya. As a former hair salon owner turned painter and collagist, Seruwu spent years driving Benon around and learning from him. Lutaaya took Seruwu under his wing, serving as a mentor and guiding him on his artistic path.
