Earlier this month the fashion designer, Rich Mnisi took to instagram to announce that his collectible furniture pieces will be exhibited at Design Miami. A global forum known to bring together the most influential players in the design world through acclaimed trade fairs and online marketplaces. Rich Mnisi made his furniture debut with two pieces for Southern Guild in 2018: Nwa-Mulamula’s Chaise and Nwa-Mulamula’s Tears. This year Rich Mnisi will exhibit as part of a group show titled “Inkundla” by Southern Guild.
The term “inkundla” derives from the Xhosa word for the area at the forefront of a homestead’s cattle enclosure – a communal space where the sacred meets the mundane. The exhibition is said to feature handcrafted furniture and objects presented in an imagined domestic environment. Rich in their physicality and form, the works are bound together by a strong sense of materiality and by their exploration of spiritual themes.
