Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe, the visionary global leader stated as early as 1960 that “There is only One race, the Human race.” Sobukwe would have been 100 years old on the 5th of December 2024 were he alive.
Sobukwe: A Great Soul was made by Free Women Films Carolyn Carew and One Take Media’s Mickey Madoba Dube as part of the SABC’s South African Historical Icon series.
To celebrate the life of this great leader there will be a one-off screening at Constitutional Hill of this multi award-winning film, Sobukwe: A Great Soul on Saturday 7th December 2024 at Number 4.
After the historic massacre of March 21st, 1960, in Sharpeville, Number 4 is where Sobukwe was first imprisoned. He was later incarcerated on Robben Island as prisoner number 1, spending six years in solitary confinement.
The screening of the celebrated film will take place inside the actual prison cells where Sobukwe and his fellow activists were kept, the same cells where Nelson Mandela and many other black prisoners were held.
Following the screening will be a short address by the following speakers with a Q&A: Zaza Siyamthanda Thyali, Mangaliso Tshepo Sobukwe, and Molebatsi Lufumo, who will expound on the values that defined Sobukwe’s life, his impact on the South African political landscape and the legacy of his activism for the next 100 years to come and on the meaning of Sobukwe’s life in today’s turbulent South Africa where his brand of leadership is sorely missed.
Sobukwe A Great Soul was produced for SABC ICONS PROJECT in 2011 and will be broadcast on SABC 2, 4th December at 22h00 and SABC TV Plus from the 5th December 2024.
