StateOfTheART is on a mission to uncover the next art superstar in South Africa and is offering one talented rising artist a R20 000 cash award and solo exhibition.
The StateoftheART Gallery Award – a visual arts prize for emerging South African artists has been announced, as well as the upcoming solo exhibition of 2019 winner of the Award, Balekane Legoabe.
The Award is open for entries until 30 June and the entry process is completely online and free of charge, encouraging young artists who have not had exposure for their work in the visual arts scene to be discovered.

The winner receives a R20 000 cash prize and a solo exhibition with StateOfTheART Gallery in 2021.
Entry is open to all artists who are permanent residents of South Africa, aged 18 to 35, and who have not held a solo exhibition with a commercial gallery.
The theme for 2020 is “On The Brink: Visualising Climate Change” and entrants are required to submit three artworks that explore this theme in relation to their own lives; to create work to inspire and encourage societal change within their community – and within the broader South African context.
The top 10 Finalists will participate in a group exhibition in Cape Town at StateOfTheART Gallery in September 2020, when the overall winner will be announced.
What it feels like to be in water
Last year’s winner is Pretoria-based artist Balekane Legoabe who will present her solo exhibition titled ‘What It Feels Like To Be In Water’ between 18 June – 4 July in an online virtual space.
Using digital collage, sound art and animation, Legoabe explores issues of mental health, the relationship between hope and despondence, and creates an audio-visual experience to communicate both difficult and happy emotions: “the waves and the stillness of the waters of life”.
The StateOfTheART Gallery Award can continue in 2020 as the entry, judging and even the Finalists exhibition can be held completely online.
StateOfTheART Gallery has a proven e-commerce model and an established 10-year virtual presence which thankfully allows them to operate under physical restrictions.
