Black Coffee Wins Big
Fresh off a Grammy win, Black Coffee has flown the South African flag high at the prestigious Grammy Award ceremony. The South African DJ & producer took home an award for Best Dance / Electronic Album with ‘Subconsciously’ beating out dance music veterans Illenium, Major Lazer, Marshmello, Sylvan Esso, and Ten City.
It’s a major feat that he has won his first Grammy for his first nomination and he won in a category that is unfamiliar to most African artists. South African musicians are usually nominated in the Best Global Music Album, which has been won by Ladysmith Black Mambazo on five occasions and twice by the Soweto Gospel Choir.
Not only did he make history for winning his first-ever Grammy award, but the DJ has also set a benchmark for all African artists that is the first of it’s kind. He is the only African artist to have won a BET Award and a Grammy Award.

“I want to thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world and heal some souls and help people go through whatever they are going through in life. I want to thank everyone who is on the album, from Msaki in South Africa, to David Guetta, who had believed in working with a smaller artist like myself, and trusting me and trusting my ear. Pharrell (Williams), Josie, Delilah, Una Rams and everyone who is on the album.” said the star in his acceptance speech.
Black Coffee’s star studded album ‘Subconsciously’ was well-reviewed by most music publications of note with many noting how he has “built a formidable map of the musical geography of the place he calls home.”
The album featured international musicians, Pharrell Williams, Usher, David Guetta, Delilah Montagu and also South Africans, Msaki, Una Rams, Tellaman and Sun El Musician.
As a result, the aforementioned South African artists can also proudly proclaim their feature on a Grammy Award winning album. Sun El Musician is featured on the track ‘You Need Me’ along side New York’s own Maxine Ashley. Pop/R&B singers Una Rams & Tellaman are featured on the Afro-electro tune ‘Flava’ and songstress Msaki was featured on the melodic ‘Wish You Were Here’.
