Women-led businesses are playing an increasingly visible role in South Africa’s technology sector, building companies, creating jobs and developing solutions for problems that affect how people work, communicate and do business. The Innovator Trust Women in Tech (WIT) Awards are returning in November to recognise that work, with this year’s programme placing particular emphasis on what happens after recognition: whether visibility can translate into meaningful opportunity.
The 2026 WIT Awards will take place on Tuesday, 24 November under the theme Tech Believers. The virtual event is open for free registration to women across South Africa and will recognise female-owned ICT SMEs that have participated in the Innovator Trust’s enterprise development and entrepreneurship programmes.
For these businesses, the journey being recognised begins well before an awards ceremony. Through the Innovator Trust’s Start-up Enterprise Development, Youth Entrepreneurship and Supplier Development incubation programmes, participating entrepreneurs have worked on the skills and resources needed to digitise, monetise and scale their businesses.
From Recognition to Real Opportunity
An award can put a business in front of an audience it might otherwise struggle to reach. But for women building companies in the technology sector, visibility only becomes valuable when it can open doors to the resources required for growth.
That can mean access to capital, procurement opportunities, partnerships, mentorship and larger markets. The WIT Awards position recognition as one part of that larger ecosystem.
“WIT celebrates evidence and action. We see it in growing businesses, new jobs and technology that solves very real problems in our country,” says Tashline Jooste, CEO of the Innovator Trust. “Through this year’s theme, Tech Believers, WIT and its partners recognise the women who have backed their ideas with action and call on the market to back proven ability with real opportunity.”
The distinction matters. Recognition can strengthen the credibility of a business when contracts are being awarded or partnerships are being formed, but it cannot replace the structures that allow that business to grow. The challenge is making sure talented women are not only celebrated for what they have built, but are given opportunities to build further.
The Women Behind the Technology
WIT’s speaker programme will bring that conversation into a wider discussion about leadership, access and economic participation. Previous speakers have included Professor Thuli Madonsela, Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Irene Charnley, Dr Roze Phillips, Tsatsi Mthimunye and Charmaine Houvet.
Their involvement reflects the broader ambition of the platform: connecting individual entrepreneurial success to the structural questions surrounding who gets access to opportunity and who is positioned to participate in South Africa’s digital economy.
For an industry that often celebrates the latest product, platform or technological breakthrough, there is value in turning the attention back towards the people building the businesses behind that progress.
What It Means to Be a “Tech Believer”
The 2026 theme speaks directly to the uncertainty that comes with building something before the market has decided it is worth backing.
Women founders often have to make those bets early: investing their time, developing their skills, taking financial risks and continuing to build while searching for customers, funding and partners. Tech Believers asks the wider ecosystem to meet that conviction with its own.
That means moving beyond symbolic support towards contracts, capital, mentorship, partnerships and market access.
The Innovator Trust was established to support the growth of small black-owned ICT businesses in South Africa, with programmes focused on training, mentorship and resources designed to help SMMEs become sustainable contributors to the technology sector and the wider economy.
The WIT Awards offer a moment to recognise the results of that work. More importantly, they point towards the question that comes after the applause: what happens when the market starts taking these businesses as seriously as the women who built them already do?
