Lebohang Motaung is a remarkable artist whose unique art style celebrates the beauty of the female African hairstyle. Through her canvas, Lebohang weaves intricate and captivating hairstyles, showcasing the complexity and elegance of this cultural expression. With a background in hair styling, she transformed her passion into an art form that engages and mesmerises viewers.

Motaung’s belief in the versatility of hair as a means of self-expression is at the core of her artistic journey. From a young age, she began experimenting with hair, braiding and styling her family and friends’ locks. By the age of 13, she had turned her talent into a means of earning money. Simultaneously, her talent for drawing began to emerge, leading her to pursue studies in fine arts. It was during this journey that she discovered her unique fusion of hair and art, ultimately becoming her signature style.

Inspiration fro Motaung’s art comes from witnessing women embracing their own image and expressing their individuality and creativity. In one of her notable works titled “Formation,” she explores the relationship between hairstylists and clients, particularly the bond that forms between women in the salon. Motaung recognizes salons as safe spaces where women ca come together, laugh and form lifelong friendships.

According to Motaung, women feel most comfortable and at ease while having their hair done. It is during this process that conversations flow freely, filled with gossip, confessions, and shared experiences. In “Formation,” Motaung highlights the significance of communication and the exchange of ideas and thoughts that arise from the act of hairstyling.
