The woman of many titles: lawyer, lecturer, masters degree candidate, novelist, poet and visual artist hailing from the mother city – Cape Town, Ferial Mohamed‘s is pleased to announce her latest exhibition, “Conversations From Home“, showcasing her mixed media paintings and poetry.
The exhibition comes in collaboration with the Cape Town-based artist and Johannesburg-based, Gallery Fanon. This six week online exhibition will go live on Artsy.com from 24 March to 5 May.
Mohamed’s works oscillate between the grotesque and whimsical, providing the viewer with an insider’s unapologetic perspective on a “Cape-Coloured” lived experience. Her portraits of friends, family, neighbours and strangers from her community convey elements of detail essential to unpacking and understanding Mohamed’s reality. Each accompanying poem provides additional texture to the socio-political undertones of Mohamed’s visual works.

“My work is in its purest construction, intended to entertain, relaying tales from a host of characters who are connected to the geographic locale I grew up in,” says the artist.
She continues by stating, “My work is concerned with a personal interest in identity, in decoloniality, in human consciousness, and reflects my appreciation of the grotesque and carnivalesque, and language or text as device, functioning at times as a recordal of culture and the issues which affect that culture. In this sense it operates as historical commentary, but this is purely incidental to my main preoccupation of storytelling.”
