South Africa’s creator economy is getting another marker of just how far it has come.
The 2026 Content Creator Awards have officially announced this year’s nominees, while Samsung Galaxy joins the awards as headline sponsor. The announcement comes four years after the awards were launched at a time when content creation was still fighting for recognition as a legitimate career.
This year, the conversation looks rather different.
The awards now position themselves around creators who are building businesses, influencing culture, driving commerce and setting new standards for the industry. That shift is reflected in the structure of the 2026 awards, which features 20 categories designed around the current creator landscape.
From proving the industry exists to raising the bar
When the Content Creator Awards launched in 2022, one of its central aims was to give legitimacy to a career path that many people still regarded as a hobby.
Founder Manuela Dias de Deus says that purpose has evolved alongside the industry.

“Today we’re recognising world-class creators who are building businesses, influencing culture, driving commerce and setting global standards.”
The awards have also introduced more rigorous entry criteria, with judging criteria developed alongside the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) South Africa in an effort to bring greater consistency and industry alignment to the process.
That evolution mirrors a broader change in the local creator economy. The Content Creator Awards describes itself as a not-for-profit platform focused not only on recognition, but on professionalising the industry and helping creators build sustainable careers and businesses.
Samsung Galaxy steps into the spotlight
Samsung Galaxy has been announced as the 2026 title sponsor, adding one of the country’s biggest technology brands to the awards’ growing network of industry partners.
For Samsung South Africa’s Head of Marketing: Mobile eXperience, Rae Hargreaves, the partnership reflects the role creators now play in shaping culture and consumer behaviour.

“Creators are shaping culture, influencing purchasing decisions and redefining storytelling every single day,” she said.
The partnership also extends into a new award category.
Meet the #CapturedWithGalaxy Award
The new #CapturedWithGalaxy Award gives creators across niches an opportunity to submit content captured on any Samsung Galaxy device.
The winner will receive a Content Creator Award trophy as well as a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 valued at approximately R40,999. Entries for the category close on 20 September 2026.
The category is an interesting addition to an awards programme increasingly recognising the relationship between technology and creative production. Rather than limiting recognition to a particular content niche, it focuses on the work itself and the tools used to make it.
Who made the 2026 shortlist?
This year’s nominees span everything from comedy and dance to podcasts, online series, music, style, automotive content and creator-brand collaborations.
Among the nominees for the Samsung Galaxy Creator of the Year Award are Donovan Goliath, Grace Mondlana, Nadia Jaftha, Primo9teen and Vafa Naraghi.

The YouTube Creator of the Year Award sees Centtwinz, Lasizwe, Noko Mashaba, Shev and Dev, SMWX and Zayaan competing for the title.

The Emerging Creator Award, backed by Creator Club, includes Anica Kiana, Isaac Mehlape, Sibo Mchunu, Sine_rsa_ and Socially Jordie.

Other nominees include Chris Rogers, Mpoomy Ledwaba, Rory Petzer, Sam from TheCarScene, Shane Assad and Tebogo Moropa in the Cars.co.za Automotive Content Award, while the People’s Choice Award features Anika Dambuza, Garfieldzar, Grace Mondlana, Olwethu Ncapayi and Tanaka Dube.
The non-public voting categories also cover a broad range of creative disciplines.
947 Sound of Tomorrow includes Chesrae Megan, Carter Najar, Lordkez, Lukiemusic, Mikhalé Jones and Teagan’s Things.

In Dance Creator, the nominees are Chad Jones, Benny Jnr, Ludopie, Rudi Smit and TDO Thando.

The Style Award features Kimos, Lue & Rue, Pumla Dineo, Wisemanzither and Yasmin Furmie, while Best Creator x Brand Collaboration recognises work by Baxbara for Delicious Festival, Lukiemusic for #IAmOriginal88, Nabilah Kariem for Le Creuset and Samsung, and Sni Mhlongo for Vaseline.

There is also room for comedy, podcasts, impact-driven content, expert voices and creators producing original online series.
The full awards programme features 20 categories, reflecting an industry that increasingly stretches beyond the traditional definition of an influencer.
A creator economy becoming an industry
Perhaps the most interesting part of this year’s awards isn’t any individual nominee. It is the ecosystem forming around them.
Samsung Galaxy joins YouTube, Telkom, 947, eVOD, Cars.co.za, The Creator Club, Humanz and Ray-Ban among the brands and organisations connected to this year’s programme.
The awards have also expanded their recognition of the commercial side of content creation. Earlier this year, the organisation introduced its Excellence in Branded Content Award, positioning creator marketing as an area where brands and agencies are expected to demonstrate creativity, cultural relevance and measurable impact.
That makes the awards increasingly useful as a snapshot of where South African digital culture is heading. The categories tell us what the industry values, while the partnerships show where brands are putting their money.
And the shift is visible in the language surrounding the awards themselves. The focus is moving away from asking whether content creation is a “real job” and towards questions of craft, influence, business, cultural impact and professional standards.
The ceremony is coming in October
The 2026 winners will be announced at the Content Creator Awards ceremony on 17 October 2026 in Sandton, Johannesburg.
With this year’s nominees now revealed, the countdown has officially begun.
For an industry that launched four years ago trying to prove that creators deserved a seat at the table, the 2026 edition arrives at a rather different table altogether.
