In Selby, Johannesburg, a fascinating artistic journey awaits as the “Family Values” exhibition takes centre stage. Closing its doors on September 1st 2023, this dual showcase brings together the profound talents of Ennock Mlangeni and Semi Lubisi, two artists who touch into the very essence of human experiences through their unique artistic lenses.

Ennock Mlangeni, a self taught visual artist with an innovative touch, has made way for himself in the industry by using discarded materials to craft masterpieces that narrate tales of resilience and transformation. Raised in Sasolburg, South Africa, Mlangeni’s journey is one of overcoming adversity. His works, created from from old newspapers, ballpoint ink, paint and even coffee granules, all these reveal the textures of his life’s journey. With remarkable skill, he blends coffee granules to craft textures that breathe life into his creations.

The foundation of Mlangeni’s art lies in his upbringing. The loss of his parents at a young age and the steadfast support of his grandmother folded him into the artist he is today. His experiences are etched onto the canvas, giving life to his perception of women in society, shaped by the unwavering strength of his grandmother.

Beside Ennock’s unique perspective, Semi Lubisi’s art adds an equally compelling dimension to the exhibition. Through his vibrant strokes and use of charcoal, watercolours and acrylics, Lubisi’s work paints a vivid picture of the township life. The  authenticity of his creations is unmistakable. Lubisi’s canvases come alive with firm charcoal strokes, evoking a tangible sense of place, while soft shades and bright colours inject vibrancy and simplicity, offering viewers a window into kasi existence.
