Simphiwe Mbunyuza has captivated the art world with his masterful exploration of African cultural symbolism through clay. His sculptures, particularly his functional and non-functional ceramic pots, delve into the relationships and interactions within African culture, with a special focus on the Xhosa people.

Growing up in the village of Mambendeni, surrounded by various Xhosa-speaking communities, Mbunyuza was immersed in the traditions of his people. Drawing from his personal background, Mbunyuza creates artworks that portray the values and significance of cultural elements from these groups.

Mbunyuza’s practice showcases a harmonious blend of materials, including stoneware, leather, fabric, and steel. His attention to detail is evident in the carefully textured surfaces of his sculptures, adorned with bold areas of color and graphic patterns. Through his distinctive forms, he breathes new life into traditional practices, such as the coiling technique used by the Xhosa people for centuries to make pots.

Exhibitions at galleries such as Dyman Gallery in Stellenbosch, South Africa, South Willard in Los Angeles, and Gallery 1957 in London and Accra, Ghana, have showcased his exceptional craftsmanship.
