Cinga Samson’s Art: A Reflection Of Personal Trauma And Universal Truths

Cinga Samson’s journey into the world of art wasn’t a traditional one. Back in 2006, at the age of 19, he stumbled upon the Isibane Creative Arts studio in Cape Town’s Khayelitsha neighbourhood. Raised in both Cape Town and the rural Transkei region, Cinga was no stranger to movement. But the moment he entered Isibane, he knew that the conventional career paths like law or medicine were not for him. He was destined to spend his life in the studio.

Samson’s art process is driven by a profound connection to his ideas and themes. He describes it as a “glitch” that takes over his mind, compelling him to create. Once an idea takes hold, he carefully plans and organizes photo shoots to capture the essence of his vision.

Drawing on canvas, he skillfully navigates the delicate balance between showcasing fear, infusing emotions into his subjects, and exploring the contrast of human existence. Samson’s portraits, characterized by dark-skinned figures with ghostly eyes and mouths, exude a sense of authority and spirituality. His use of different layers and textures creates a captivating atmosphere, blending darkness and light.

Samson’s impact extends beyond his own artistry. He actively mentors and collaborates with a group of young artists, fostering intergenerational connections and passing on techniques and theories. He draws inspiration from the European Masters, who have long embraced this tradition. Samson recognizes his significance in the African art scene and aims to use his works to shed light on the truth of our time. His haunting figures resonate with a universal appeal, transcending cultural boundaries.

Samson’s studio is a space that is bustling with life and creativity. He emphasizes the importance of collaboration and intuition in his artistic process. While deadlines and the responsibility of others’ livelihoods can occasionally make painting feel like a job, Samson remains grateful for the opportunity to pursue his passion. His studio is a hub of activity, with constant demonstrations, adjustments, and interactions with fellow artists.
