Maxhosa Africa, made its debut at Paris Fashion Week, showcasing traditional Xhosa textile and beadwork at the Residence of the Ambassador of South Africa to France. Founder and creative director, Laduma Ngxokolo fulfilled his dream of showcasing in Paris, aiming to connect with the African diaspora and expand the brands reach.

Ngxokolo presented a “cultural event” rather than a traditional runway show, narrating South African culture, identity, and fashion through his designs. He aimed to challenge Western perceptions of African fashion by modernizing traditional styles for a new generation while maintaining a focus on culture and colour in his aesthetic.

Ngxokolo emphasized the importance of incorporating culture and history into everyday wear, advocating for the normalization of wearing heritage-inspired clothing on a daily basis.

For many young designers, showcasing in Paris is an achievement, offering a platform to engage with the international market and shape the conversation around African fashion. Laduma’s future plans include opening a store in Soho, New York, while also committing to making Paris Fashion Week a regular occurrence for Maxhosa Africa.
