In September 2024, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Portugal will host an exhibition called “Black Ancient Futures.” The exhibition brings together artists from Africa and the African diaspora to showcase their creative visions of the past, present and future of black art.
The artists involved in the exhibition come from diverse backgrounds, including countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, South Africa, Brazil, and more. They will present a variety of artworks, including installations that challenge traditional ideas of art.

One of the standout pieces in the exhibition is “Sleep in Witness” by artist Lungiswa Gqunta. This installation unpacks the world of dreams as a space for learning, with black women shaping the artwork through their movements.

Another highlight of the exhibition is a performance by artist Jeannette Ehlers called “We’re Magic. We’re Real #3 (These Walls).” This performance uses hair as a symbol of identity within the African diaspora, giving a powerful and meaningful experience for viewers.
