Acuity Art Advisory went LIVE on 30 April 2020, with its unique inaugural online auction sale, Artists First.
The fledgling art advisory business has immediately carved a significant market niche, and brings a range of turnkey offerings for collectors and new buyers.
This is its first online auction sale of work by contemporary and emerging South African artists, and in curating and organising it, Acuity has made the bold move of giving back all proceeds from the sale to the artists concerned, barring a small administrative fee.
Despite the large number of sales and commercial art activity moving online in response to lockdown and global constraints, Acuity’s auction sale is different in that it focuses entirely on selling on behalf of the artists making the work.
Featuring a range of cutting-edge contemporary artists, the sale aims to help artists get through these tough times by directing all proceeds of the sale back to them, instead of subtracting the usual industry-standard fees. Buyers and collectors will be treated to some of the finest contemporary work on the market, from established and upcoming artists like Mikhael Subotzky, Ed Young, Minnette Vari, David Lurie and Colbert Mashile, to emerging talents like Thembinkosi Hlatshwayo, Natasha Brown, Lindokuhle Sobekwa and CJ Chandler.
In addition, Acuity has made great efforts to keep auction estimates and pricing accessible, with the majority of lots on the sale coming in at estimates of R20 000 and below – sometimes well below, to cater for the full range of collecting budgets. The auction is being conducted on the respected and secure international online platform Auction Mobility, and can be accessed through Acuity’s website, and bidders can register and start bidding in minutes.
