Great news for comedy fans! Showmax is bringing the US series Superstore to local audiences with twist—a Zulu-language adaptation. This announcement comes as the show celebrates its 10th anniversary since it first aired, and fans are waiting to see how the characters from Cloud 9 will fit into a South African setting.
This isn’t the first time Showmax has taken on big-name comedies. After successfully adapting The Office, they are now partnering with NBCUniversal Formats to create the first African version of Superstore. Production will start this year, and it will be handled by Barkers Media, the team behind hit shows like Shebeen Queens and The Bala Family.

The original Superstore, created by Justin Spitzer, follows the chaotic lives of employees working in a mega-store. The show became a favourite, attracting over six million viewers per episode during its six seasons. It is filled with humour and relatable moments, earning praise as one of the best workplace comedies on TV.
The South African version will keep the core themes of community and friendship while adding local flavour to the storylines. Nicola van Niekerk, MultiChoice’s executive head of programming, shared her excitement, saying, “I laughed my way through every episode of Superstore and can’t wait to see how these funny characters are reimagined in our complex country.”
