The journey of an emerging visual artist is often defined by a single breakthrough moment. For more than six decades, the Sasol New Signatures Visual Arts Competition has served as that pivotal catalyst for South African creatives. Established by the Association of Arts Pretoria, this iconic platform is the longest-running and most prestigious art competition in the country. With the submission deadline rapidly approaching, undiscovered talents from every corner of South Africa have a unique opportunity to propel their careers into the professional art world.

Thabo Treasure Mofokeng – runner up 2025

Entering the competition offers a chance to win the coveted R100,000 grand prize and secure a life-changing solo exhibition. It is a definitive launchpad designed to give new voices the infrastructure, visibility, and validation they need to build sustainable creative careers.

A Legacy of Elevating South African Art

For over 60 years, Sasol New Signatures has played a defining role in discovering, nurturing, and elevating South Africa’s contemporary art scene. The competition has launched the careers of some of the country’s most celebrated and respected visual artists. By participating, you insert your name into a proud lineage of creative innovators who have shaped the national cultural landscape.

Bonginkoso Liyo Mkhatshwa – Merit 2024

Unlike platforms that favor established figures, this competition is specifically engineered for fresh talent. It is open to all South African citizens and permanent residents aged 18 and older who have not yet held a solo exhibition, excluding academic showcases like graduate exhibitions. With no upper age limit, the platform welcomes untapped talent at any stage of adult life, making it one of the most accessible and democratic arenas in the visual arts sector.

Unmatched National Exposure and Industry Integration

Andrea du Plessis – Winner 2023

For any emerging artist, getting your work seen by the right people is half the battle. Sasol New Signatures solves this problem by providing unparalleled national exposure. Artworks selected for the top 100 are showcased in a flagship exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum. This exhibition is a major fixture on the cultural calendar, drawing curators, gallery owners, prominent collectors, media houses, and art lovers.

In addition to the physical exhibition, all finalists are featured in a professionally produced printed and digital catalogue. This publication serves as a permanent, high-status record of your participation and acts as a powerful marketing asset for your personal portfolio when approaching commercial galleries in the future.

Ultimate Creative Freedom: All Mediums Welcome

The contemporary art world is fluid, and Sasol New Signatures fully embraces this evolution. The competition does not confine entrants to traditional formats. Instead, it actively encourages creative experimentation, innovation, and diverse forms of visual expression.

Luyanda Zindela.- runner up 2019

Artists are welcome to submit work across an extensive array of disciplines, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, ceramics, video art, digital installations, and mixed media. Whether your style is deeply traditional, highly conceptual, or technologically avant-garde, your voice has a place in this competition.

National Footprint and Essential Resources

Geography should never be a barrier to creative success. To ensure equal access for artists living outside major metropolitan hubs, the competition utilizes a nationwide footprint. Entries can be submitted through eight strategically located regional collection points across South Africa. This setup eliminates the logistical headache and high cost of shipping fragile artwork across the country.

These tools help artists understand how to properly present, frame, and pitch their work. For those who make it into the winners’ circle, the support intensifies with direct mentorship and career guidance from industry professionals and competition stakeholders.
