Over the past week, MTV Base had once again assembled a panel of experts to determine who this year’s hottest MCs are. The highly anticipated MTV Base Hottest MCs 2021 played out as a two-part special on MTV Base (DStv 322) on 2 and 3 December at 17:30. Every year since the list was first introduced in 2014, the MTV Base “Hottest MCs” list has consistently sparked heated debates on our timelines. Whether it’s the tired AKA vs Cassper Nyovest debate, or arguments about who is and isn’t an MC, we are always guaranteed some pandemonium when the the list is being unveiled. This year’s Hottest MCs were based on musicians who have managed to stay in the game, delivering the hottest songs and pushed the culture forward.
Determining this year’s top-crop was DJ Zan D, Shala The Unicorn, Kai, Buhle, Siya and French Fry, a younger cohort than what we’ve become accustomed to.
The Hottest MC List Left Hip Hop Fans Feeling Some Type Of Way
The offices results were announced at the end of the second day which send social media timelines into a frenzy. This year’s list crowned new wave rapper Blxckie was the country’s hottest MC. This came at no surprise as the young artist has quickly garnered an impressive career. Blxckie’s impeccable flow and cadence, work ethic, extensive collaborations with artists that span over numerous genres, cult following on social media and his unproblematic, fun loving persona secured him the number one spot on the list. Twitter users didn’t seem to have much issue with Blxckie’s number one spot ranking, outside of them raising the point on how his career hasn’t been long enough to really prove his relevancy in the game. However the names that followed certainly ruffled a few feathers sparking passionate debates over which artists should be placed at which ranking.
Here are some of the spirited criticisms of the Hottest MC 2021 finalists that have still be spoke about about today:
#BaseHottestMCs I don’t understand. Is this Hottest Mcs or Hottest Artists of SA 2020? Because of its artists then that list makes sense but for Mcs? For big Zulu to be at that position? For Cass? Not mentioning nasty and Costa? This list is a joke I think I’ll wait Mr bean
