South African artist Hylton Nel’s ceramic sculptures took center stage at the recent Dior Men Summer 2025 collection unveiling in Paris. The runway was transformed with six massive reproductions of Nel’s whimsical cat works, providing a backdrop for the fashion showcase.
Hylton Nel, an 83-year-old potter known for his distinctive visual language, draws inspiration from his surroundings and personal experiences to create ceramic pieces adorned with witty line drawings and symbols. His works feature a mix of playful elements such as cats, penises, angels, and script from poetry and current events, showcasing his creativity and unique perspective.

Kim Jones, the Creative Director of Dior Homme, was drawn to Nel’s artistry and visited him in the Karoo to draw inspiration for the collection. The fusion of Nel’s ceramic giants with Dior’s outfits brought a touch of fun and creativity to the runway, creating a visually stunning and unconventional show.
The Dior Men Summer 2025 collection not only celebrated Nel’s sculptures but also highlighted the craftsmanship of another South African brand, Earth Age.
Collaborating with milliner Stephen Jones, the Cape Town-based accessories brand created crochet hats adorned with ceramic beads, adding a stylish and cultural touch to the overall presentation.

With a nod to the colours of South Africa’s landscape and the appearance of unfired clay. The use of his signature cats and other motifs on the runway showcased a refreshing and eye-catching mixture of fashion and contemporary art, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
