KwaZulu-Natal is set to make history this August with the launch of its first contemporary art fair, marking a significant milestone for the province’s visual arts sector. Taking place from 7 to 9 August 2026 at Hilton College as part of the 34th Hilton Arts Festival, the inaugural KZN Art Fair aims to create new opportunities for artists, galleries, designers and collectors while strengthening the province’s creative economy.
Positioned as a platform for both established and emerging talent, the fair hopes to connect KwaZulu-Natal’s growing community of artists and creative practitioners with new audiences and markets, creating pathways for more sustainable creative careers.
“We’re excited to bring contemporary art to what is essentially an unexplored frontier of the art market on the east coast,” says co-founder Lungelo Mkhize. “By doing so, we hope to create a vehicle through which this market can be explored and sustained.”
The fair joins South Africa’s growing calendar of major art events alongside the RMB Latitudes Art Fair, Investec Cape Town Art Fair, and FNB Art Joburg, while becoming the first initiative of its kind dedicated to KwaZulu-Natal’s visual arts ecosystem.
Co-founder Angela Shaw believes the province has long been ready for a platform of this scale.
“There are already many thriving practitioners, collectives, a dynamic incubator gallery and eager collectors,” she says. “The KZN Art Fair is the organic result of abundant creative content and a clear demand for the growth of the province’s creative industries.”
Visitors can expect a curated programme showcasing contemporary visual art, design and craft from across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond. Gallery presentations will feature both career artists and emerging voices, while artist collectives, independent curators and auction houses from Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Howick will also participate.
One of the fair’s centrepieces is Making Ground, a design and craft exhibition sponsored by Belgotex and co-curated by Angela Shaw and design strategist Lauren Lockhart-Barker. The exhibition celebrates KwaZulu-Natal’s contribution to contemporary South African design through ceramics, textiles, woven materiality, basketry and industrial design, highlighting the province’s rich culture of making.
Beyond the exhibitions, the fair places a strong emphasis on education and professional development.
On Friday, 7 August, the Creative Futures: Jongosi Visual Arts programme will introduce high school learners and tertiary students to careers within the visual arts through curator-led exhibition walkabouts, practical workshops and conversations with industry professionals. The initiative is designed to expose young creatives to the breadth of opportunities available across South Africa’s creative sector.
Throughout the weekend, the public programme will feature panel discussions and curator-led walkabouts exploring some of the industry’s most pressing conversations. Topics include artist-led cultural spaces, writing South African art history, sustainable creative economies, and building stronger arts ecosystems through collaboration between artists, institutions, funders and collectors.
The fair’s location also reflects its broader ambitions. Hosted at Hilton College in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, visitors will find themselves in one of South Africa’s most significant cultural and tourism corridors, with nearby creative landmarks including the Nelson Mandela Capture Site Museum and Ardmore Ceramic Studios. The surrounding Midlands region continues to strengthen its reputation as a destination for art, craft and design, further reinforced by nearby Howick’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City for Craft and Folklore.
With more than 25,000 visitors attending the Hilton Arts Festival annually, organisers believe the event provides an ideal platform to introduce a dedicated contemporary art fair to new audiences while further establishing KwaZulu-Natal as an important contributor to South Africa’s cultural landscape.
The inaugural KZN Art Fair runs from 7 to 9 August 2026 at Hilton College in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, with a VIP Vernissage taking place on 6 August. Day passes are priced at R180 for adults, R100 for seniors and R50 for students, while a four-day VIP pass costs R550.
