Lena Hugo explores the concept of immersing and emerging through her exhibition titled “immerse/emerge.” Her work unpacks the studies of individuals, capturing the essence of the person beyond surface appearances. By portraying people who are often disregarded or undervalued, Hugo aims to highlight their significance and humanity.

She investigates how physical or emotional displacement impacts one’s sense of identity and belonging, giving viewers a chance to contemplate these experiences through her artistic lens.
Collaborating with founding artist Gerrit Handl, who has curated previous exhibitions on displacement, Hugo’s work will contribute to a deeper exploration of the theme.
Building on the narratives of past residents, including Athenkosi Kwinana, Sharon Peters, and Lwando Hlazo, the exhibition aims to spark conversations on conviviality, reshaping perceptions, and embracing diverse perspectives.
