Melville Art Mile has officially opened applications for its upcoming Women’s Month edition of First Thursdays, inviting female artists, venues, businesses and creatives to participate in an evening dedicated to celebrating women in the arts.

Taking place on Thursday, 6 August 2026, from 4pm to 9pm, the special edition, titled Ladies First, will transform Melville into a vibrant showcase of exhibitions, performances and creative experiences, highlighting the women helping shape South Africa’s cultural landscape.

A Celebration of Women in the Arts

As part of its monthly First Thursdays programme, Melville Art Mile is placing women at the centre of August’s event by creating opportunities for female artists to exhibit and sell their work while encouraging local businesses and venues to become active participants in the celebration.

According to the open call, female artists will receive priority when applications are reviewed. Artists working across various disciplines are encouraged to apply, making the event an opportunity to showcase both emerging and established creative voices.

The initiative also extends beyond visual artists, welcoming performers, vendors and creatives from across the cultural sector to become part of the evening’s programme.

Opportunities for Artists, Venues and Businesses

The open call isn’t limited to artists alone. Melville Art Mile is also inviting venues and businesses to get involved by hosting exhibitions or becoming sponsors for the event.

Participating venues will have the opportunity to welcome First Thursdays visitors into their spaces, while sponsors can support the initiative and connect with an audience made up of art lovers, collectors and members of Johannesburg’s creative community.

By encouraging collaboration between artists, local businesses and cultural spaces, the event aims to strengthen Melville’s reputation as one of Johannesburg’s most vibrant creative districts.

An Evening Designed Around Community

For several years, First Thursdays has become synonymous with exploring galleries, independent businesses and creative spaces after hours. The Women’s Month edition builds on that tradition by creating a platform where women-led creativity takes centre stage.

Beyond showcasing artwork, the event offers visitors the opportunity to meet artists, discover new creative talent and experience the neighbourhood through exhibitions, performances and cultural programming spread across Melville.

Whether you’re looking to exhibit your work, host an event or simply explore Johannesburg’s creative scene, Ladies First promises an evening centred on connection, creativity and community.

How to Apply

Applications for the Ladies First edition of Melville Art Mile are now open but will be closing soon.

Artists, venues, businesses and performers interested in participating can submit their applications through the official Melville Art Mile website. Visitors hoping to attend the event can also register in advance, with ticket options ranging from free registration to premium experiences.

With Women’s Month around the corner, the initiative offers another opportunity to celebrate the women whose creativity continues to shape South Africa’s arts and culture landscape.
