Nakhane, a well-known musician, actor, and novelist, has added another feather to their cap by stepping into the world of filmmaking. Nathane’s highly anticipated South African short film, “B(l)ind The Sacrifice,” made its premiere at the 77th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. Out of a whopping four thousand submissions, Nakhane’s film was selected to compete in the Pardi di Domani section, known for showcasing avant-garde works by up-and-coming directors.
Teaming up with film producers Cait Pansegrouw and Elias Ribeiro from Urucu Media, Nakhane served as the writer and director of “B(l)ind The Sacrifice.” This creative trio has a track record of notable works, including the acclaimed “Inxeba (The Wound),” which was South Africa’s entry for the Oscars in 2018.

Inspired by the Biblical story of Abraham and Isaac, the film unpacks themes of masculinity, patriarchy, and power in a modern setting. Nakhane’s curiosity about Isaac’s perspective after being nearly sacrificed by his father sparked the narrative, exploring the psychological aftermath and the impact of blind obedience to authority.
The film poses thought-provoking questions about dismantling patriarchal structures and the intersection with queerness, envisioning a world where traditional power dynamics are challenged by a new generation. Nakhane aims to expand this short film into a full-length feature to talk deeper into these intricate themes.
Pansegrouw, also the casting director for the film, expressed excitement about the positive reception from the premiere audience at the Locarno Film Festival. The film’s potential has resonated with viewers, prompting the team to consider further developing the story into a feature film that can reach a wider audience and spark meaningful conversations.
