Multi- SAMA Award winning Artist Nduduzo Makathini to kick off the year of live performances in the heart of Johannesburg.
A man with many labels: pianist, composer, healer and the leading voice in African Jazz. Nduduzo Makathini has been a favourite for South African jazz fans for years and with a collection of 8 studio albums under his belt, he has managed to set a precedent of noir excellence in the African Jazz soundscape.
like many great musicians, Nduduzo’s affinity for music sparked from home grounds. “Nduduzo grew up in the lush and rugged hillscapes of umGungundlovu in South Africa, a peri-urban landscape in which music and ritual practices were symbiotically linked”. the church also played a great influence in his musical background. In his younger days he hopped from church to church in search of only the music, often leaving before the sermon started, which is the story behind his composition “There’s Another Church Up The Road” off his 2014 album Mother Tongue.
Today, the artist boasts a slew of accolades. From winning three South African Music Awards (SAMAs), to making history by being the iconic jazz label Blue Note Record’s first South African signee.
Kicking off the year with his first peformance of 2022, Nduduzo Makhathini will be performing what he pens and an, ‘opening ritual’ entitled Impicabadala at the renowned Leano Restaurant in Braamfontein, 15 January 2022. The event will be a partnership between the musical establishment and Banda Banda Agency, who have brought the likes of Manana and Thandi Ntuli centre stage in the heart of Johannesburg.
