An ensemble of Jazz
On Sunday we listened to SPAZA’s Sizwile, 8 and half minutes of a jazz ensemble that was recorded over three days in July 2016 inside a flat in Yeoville, Johannesburg. What came from those three days is a waltz of sound. Nonku Phiri’s vocals are in a dance with Maclom Jiyane’s voice together with his piano and trombone. Gontse Makhene’s vocals and percussion, the sound birthed from his hands touching the surface of musical instruments, accompanies this dance with Ariel Zamonsky’s upright bass. The spoken word piece that carries with it the vocals and sound completes the soothing and beautiful ensemble that encompasses everything of our past we cannot see.
