Phumulani Ntuli’s “Umfanekiso Uyopha Inkungu” Exhibition Opens At UJ Art Gallery

The university of Johannesburg Art Gallery is excited to announce a solo exhibition by Phumulani Ntuli, titled “Umfanekiso Uyopha Inkungu,” which means “An Image Oozes Mist.” This exhibition will open on October 12, 2024, and will continue until November 15, 2024.

Ntuli’s artwork is unique and thought-provoking. He takes old images from important events in South Africa’s history and reimagines them. By changing these images, he encourages us to think about how we understand history and the stories that images tell. His art makes us pause and reconsider our previous thoughts about these events.

Phumulani’s artwork is thought-provoking. He takes old images from important events in South Africa’s history and reimagines them. By changing these images, he encourages us to think about how we understand history and the stories that images tell. His art makes us pause and reconsider our previous thoughts about these events.

One of the fascinating aspects of Ntuli’s work is his use of open-source software ideas in art. This concept, which is about sharing tools and ideas within a community, inspired him to create special 3D silicone rollers. These rollers have interesting patterns, like parallel lines and waves, which he incorporates into his collages. By using these unique tools, he expands his style, blending traditional techniques with innovative ideas.

Phumulani Ntuli is no stranger to international acclaim. He represented South Africa at the Venice Biennale in 2022, showcasing his incredible talent on a global stage. In this exhibition, he will also collaborate with the UJ VR Space, introducing a new dimension to his art.

In addition to the exhibition, the gallery will host exciting events for the public. Attendees can join a guided walkabout with the artist himself, getting a deeper understanding of his work. There will also be the launch of his first catalogue, titled “Fictional Geographies.” Co-edited with curator Sofía Steinvorth, this catalog reflects on Ntuli’s exhibition in South Africa, Italy, and Spain, offering insights through interviews and writings.
