Sotheby’s is excited to showcase their upcoming Modern & Contemporary African Art sale in March, featuring artworks from African artists. The exhibition will be held at 34-35 New Bond Street, with an online auction scheduled for Thursday, March 21.
The auction will feature pieces by artists such as Alexis Preller, Irma Stern, Amoako Boafo, Gerard Sekoto, Ben Enwonwu, Mohamed Melehi, Ouattara Watts, Vladmir Tretchikoff, J.H Pierneef, and Sydney Kumalo, among others.

A standout piece in the collection is Alexis Preller’s “Portrait of the Artist as a Visionary,” with an estimated value of £200,000-300,000. This artwork showcases Preller’s style and includes symbolic elements like a kingfisher and an apple, representing themes of mortality, immortality, knowledge, and temptation.
Irma Stern’s works, “Hamida Hamed” and “Watermelon and Dahlias,” will also be featured in the auction, giving a glimpse into the artist’s visit to Zanzibar and her love for still life compositions.

Sydney Kumalo’s sculpture, “St Francis,” will be another highlight of the sale, depicting the patron saint of animals and the environment with a blend of Christian and African symbolism. Additionally, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef’s “Acacia Trees in the Veld” will showcase the artist’s portrayals of South African landscapes.
The auction will also include contemporary works by artists like Kudzanai Chiurai, Nicholas Hlobo, Zanele Muholi, and William Kentridge, adding a modern touch to the collection.
