An online print sale was launched on 1 June to raise funds in support of vulnerable members of the LGBTIQ+ community in the Western Cape.
‘the print sale project’ brings together leading and emerging South African photographers to raise urgently needed donations through an online limited edition print sale.
The artwork available ranges from images of regional landscapes to intimate portraits.
With each of the images sold, 100% of the proceeds will provide a complete food box, range of hygiene products (including face masks, soap and sanitary pads), and vital electricity credit for an LGBTIQ+ individual or family affected by the health, economic and social issues caused by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
WE CAN (Working for Equality Community Action Network), who are spearheading the project, are a grassroots network made up of Cape Town residents setting out to provide urgent assistance to the local LGBTIQ+ community. WE CAN is working in
partnership with the Triangle Project for fundraising, community outreach and emergency assistance.
For many who identify as LGBTIQ+ in the Cape Flats and townships, home is a place where many sleep rough and regularly need to move about – often because their family of origin has made their lives impossible through expressions of violence, prejudice, homophobia or transphobia.
Water and sanitation is a constant issue, and many find themselves living without basic sanitary conditions and live in spaces that are unhygienic.
Many LGBTIQ+ individuals group together in chosen families, to support and care for each other through generations – there are children and older people in these communities.
As with any families there is love and care, but also much vulnerability that has been severely heightened through the
pandemic.
The participating photographers are; Aart Verrips, Alessandro Iovino, Alexia Webster, Antonia Steyn, Carl Collison, Caroline Mackintosh, Duane Howard, Francis Marais, Francois Visser, Gabriella Achadinha, Gavin Goodman, Hayden phipps, Hylton Boucher, J’Dee Allin, Jacques Weyers, Kent Andreasen, Kyle Springate, Lee-Ann Olwage, Luke Kuisis, Marcel Maasen, Nadia Von Scotti, Nonzuzo Gxekwa, Rudi Geyser, and Sven Kristian.
All prints are A4, printed by Dog Ear Editions in Cape Town and cost $40 (R700) each. The dates of the online sale are; 1st – 30th June, 2020.
